ロンドンのジャズシーンを代表し「UKジャズ」を語る上で欠かせない存在に成長したサウスロンドン出身のミュージシャン/プロデューサー、カマール・ウィリアムスが3枚目のアルバム『Stings』と共に満を辞してのジャパンツアーを敢行。ソロセットとなる東京・南青山BAROOMを皮切りに、カルテットでのバンドセットとなる東京・渋谷WWW X、京都METRO、愛知・名古屋24PILLARSと巡る。

ジャズとダンス・ミュージックを横断する独特の感性で世界中から絶大な人気を獲得し、ヘンリー・ウー名義やユセフ・デイズとのデュオ、ユセフ・カマールがイギリスに新たなジャズの波をもたらしたことは記憶に新しく、本名義では2018年のファースト・アルバム『The Return』、2020年に『Wu Hen』をリリース。パンデミックの最中に書き上げられたという新作『Stings』では孤独、内省、そして深い精神性が数多くのレイヤーと共に再現されており、時にドビュッシーを連想させるような印象派の交響曲の断片やヒップホップ、エレクトロニックビートのもつ宇宙的な領域、そして故・坂本龍一の変幻自在で自然と調和されたサウンドを思い起こさせる。アルバムフィーチャリングにはロサンゼルスのマエストロ、ミゲル・アトウッド＝ファーガソンを始め、実力派が勢ぞろい。そして日本のダンスミュージックシーンでもマスターピースとして挙げられるパル・ジョイ「Soho – Hot Music」を大胆にジャズアレンジ。世界的デザイン事務所ペンタグラムのパートナー、サシャ・ローブの隙のないフォントとキンブリー・ロイドによるススメバチのアートワークがアグレッシブかつ繊細なサウンドを視覚的にまとめ上げている。国内でのスタンディングライブは初となる東京公演を含め、アルバムからインスピレーションを得たピアノソロライブを含めた4つの異なる公演を開催。音符とメロディの総和を超え更に深化したカマール・ウィリアムスの必見のパフォーマンスを見逃すな。
Kamaal Williams, a musician/producer from South London, who has become an indispensable figure in the “UK jazz” scene will be touring Japan this March. While the tour is organized by Tsubaki FM, Kamaal will tour alongside his album release “Stings” in the same month.
Starting with a solo show at BARROOM (Tokyo), the tour takes on the quartet to WWW X (Tokyo), METRO (Kyoto), and 24PILLARS (Nagoya).

Kamaal’s unique sensibility that crosses jazz and dance music has earned him immense popularity around the world. Fresh in our memories, Yusef Kamal, under the name of Henry Wu or in a duo with Yusef Daze, brought a new wave of jazz to the UK with his first album “The Return” in 2018 and “Wu Hen” in 2020.
His new album “Stings,” written in the midst of a pandemic, recreates solitude, introspection, and deep spirituality with numerous layers. Reminiscent of Debussy, fragments of impressionist symphonies, hip-hop, the cosmic realm of electronic beats, and the transformative, spontaneous music of the late Ryuichi Sakamoto. The album also features a bold jazz arrangement of Pal Joy’s “Soho – Hot Music,” which is considered a masterpiece in the Japanese dance music scene.
The seamless font by Sasha Loeb, a partner in the world-renowned design firm Pentagram, and Susubachi’s artwork by Kimbry Lloyd visually sum up the aggressive yet subtle sound. Including their first standing live performance in Japan at WWW X (Tokyo), the band will perform four different shows, including a solo piano show inspired by the album.
